1 Interview Study
NSW project team members lead the Interview Study in year 2 and involves ‘per state’ data from schools, ‘per subject’ data from PE providers, and ‘policy context’ data from state and national jurisdictions.
Per state data will focus on school-based perspectives on the factors influencing PE uptake will be gained through interviews conducted by all team members with the aim of sampling:
a range of characteristics known to be related to the incidence of OOF teaching (e.g., geographical location, socio-economic-status [Shah et al., 2022; Weldon, 2016]) and
a range of good practices inproviding support to OOF teachers in different subject specialisms (Hobbs & Campbell, 2015).
Teachers will be selected to ensure are a mix of OOF teachers across the four dedicated subjects.
Per subject data for the four subject areas will be generated through interviews with providers of PE specifically designed for OOF teachers to ascertain factors relating to PE design (e.g., Faulkner, Kenny, Campbell & Crisan, 2019), uptake patterns, participant factors (e.g., motivations, confidence, capabilities), subject cultural norms towards OOF teacher PE. Two interviews for each subject (total 8 interviews) will ensure coverage of PE provider types, including universities, subject associations, for-profit providers, and government (Hobbs et al., 2022).
